ENG While preparing my little blog post on Muubs, a company that produces interior products of recycled materials, among others, I casually found out that the Dacarr rubber products made from upcycled car tires currently originate from Vietnam – whereas, before the civil war, they were made in Syria!

And that last week on Wednesday six years had passed since the outbreak of the woesome war! – A spark of hope is brought by designer Tuula Pöyhönen and entrepreneur Martta Leskelä's Ragamuf project as Syrian refugee women are weaving chair rugs in neighboring Turkey, and the rug rags are surplus material by the Turkish textile industry.

FIN Tehdessäni pikkupostausta myös kierrätysmateriaaleja sisustustuotteissaan käyttävästä Muubsista, sain sattumalta selville että Dacarr-brändin alla myytävät, kierrätetyistä autonrenkaista valmistetut kumituotteet tehdään nykyisin Vietnamissa – kun ne ennen sisällissotaa tehtiin Syyriassa! Ja että surullisen sodan syttymisestä tuli viime viikon keskiviikkona kuluneeksi 6 vuotta! – Toivonkipinän tuo muotoilija Tuula Pöyhösen ja yrittäjä Martta Leskelän Ragamuf-projekti, jossa syyrialaiset pakolaisnaiset tekevät Turkissa tuoliryijyjä. Verkko ja kuteet saadaan läheltä: Turkki on tekstiiliteollisuusmaa, ja käytetyt kuteet ovat ylijäämämateriaalia.

Recycle The Look: Muubs

ENG Danish Bent Povlsen, founder of Muubs producing furniture and decorative items of a raw and unique urban look, has been quoted saying something along the lines of "I'm not a macho but Muubs is masculine – and we all have a masculine side to us... my goal is not for Muubs to grow as big as possible but for the products to have a transparent DNA."

The company manufactures its glass products of recycled glass as the same look cannot be achieved by using new glass. Rubber products are made of upcycled car tires and sold under Dacarr brand, while stool tops are of surplus wood generated by cutting kitchen countertops to obtain an opening for the sink. Among the raw materials is also teak wood sourced from demolition sites as Indonesians opt for more durable stone houses. 

FIN Käsittelemättömän ja urbaanin uniikin näköisiä huonekaluja tuottavan Muubsin perustaja, tanskalainen Bent Povlsen sanoo Avotakan (tammikuu 2017) haastattelussa: "En ole macho, mutta Muubs on maskuliininen - ja meissä kaikissa on maskuliininen puoli... päämääräni ei ole, että Muubs kasvaa mahdollisimman isoksi, vaan että tuotteilla on kirkas DNA."

Yrityksen lasituotteiden valmistuksessa käytetään kierrätyslasia, koska "samaa näköä ei saa uuteen lasiin", Dacarr-kumituotteet syntyvät kierrätetyistä autonrenkaista, ja jakkaroiden kannet tehdään ylijäämäpaloista, jotka syntyvät, kun keittiötasoista leikataan aukko altaalle. Raaka-aineiden joukosta löytyy myös kierrätettyä tiikkiä, jota saadaan muun muassa puretuista taloista, kun indonesialaiset rakentavat kestävämpiä kivitaloja.

ENG Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek's limited IKEA collection, Jassa, featuring sustainable bamboo and rattan furniture and lamps as well as baskets, ceramics and colorful textiles will go on sale in March 2017.

Here are some images of the designer's, most famous for his scrapwood chairs and stools, workshop-office located in an old Philips factory, published on Love is speed blog. – "If you do something, something will happen", that's Piet Hein Eek's motto!

FIN Hollantilaisen suunnittelijan, Piet Hein Eekin ideoima rajoitettu IKEA-kokoelma Jassa, jossa on kestävien bambu- ja rottinkihuonekalujen ja -valaisimien lisäksi koreja, keramiikkaa ja värikkäitä tekstiilejä, tulee myyntiin maaliskuussa 2017.

Tässä muutamia kuvia suunnittelijan – joka tunnetaan parhaiten romupuisista tuoleista ja jakkaroistaan – yhdistetystä toimistosta ja verstaasta. Se sijaitsee vanhassa Philipsin tehtaassa, ja kuvat on julkaistu Love is speed -blogissa. – "Jos teet jotain, jotain tapahtuu", se on Piet Hein Eekin motto!

It's Habitare Time!

ENG It's Habitare time! The day after tomorrow! Finnish design is at the heart of the largest furniture, interior decoration and design fair in Finland, and back in June me and other bloggers got a chance to visit designer Harri Koskinen's office in Hakaniemi, Helsinki.

During the visit, while enjoying Caffi roastery's aromatic coffee, and mouth-watering raw cakes, we heard about Koskinen's new Korona lamp, the appearance of which can be updated by exchanging the metal rings that come in blue, green, red, yellow, white, brushed aluminum and polished copper. The lamp's energy-efficient LEDs last up to 40 years in domestic use. – At Habitare, Koskinen's extensive production will be presented in an exhibition dedicated to the Kaj Franck Design Prize winner; he has designed among others the Genelec loudspeakers in the bottom picture.

FIN Habitare alkaa jo ylihuomenna! Kotimainen muotoilu on uudistuvan Habitaren ytimessä, ja minä sain kesäkuussa muiden bloggareiden kanssa kurkistaa Korona-valaisimen suunnittelijan, muotoilija Harri Koskisen työhuoneeseen Hakaniemessä. Habitaressa Koskisen laajaa tuotantoa tullaan esittelemään myös Kaj Franck -muotoilupalkinnon voittajan näyttelyssä; hän on mm. suunnitellut alimman kuvan Genelec-kaiuttimet. – Kuullessamme vierailun aikana valaisimesta, jonka energiatehokkaat ledit kestävät kotikäytössä jopa 40 vuotta ja jonka ilmettä voi päivittää metallirenkaita vaihtamalla, nautimme Caffi-paahtimon aromikasta kahvia, ja suussasulavia raakakakkuja.

ENG September 1st, 2nd, 3rd... It's about time I started blogging again after the summer holidays that took me to Spain and Italy (I again returned loaded with tiles I had once found in a pile along the roadside in Italy – click here for the photo) as well as to the summer cottage in Finland.

What turned out as a common thread throughout the summer were some books I found along a Barcelona street in June... And I even tried writer and literary critic Ford Madox Ford's (1873–1939) trick to quickly find out whether we'll like a book or not: Just open the book on page 99, and if the narrative is intriguing enough to prompt us to turn to page 100, we've found a novel that works for us. I don't really know whether I agree... You'll have to find out for yourself!

FIN Syyskuun 1, 2, 3... On jo aikakin, että aloitan taas bloggaamisen kesälomien jälkeen! Kesä vei minut ensin Espanjaan ja Italiaan (josta palasin taas tonnin painoinen laukku täynnä kerran italialaisesta tienvarsikasasta löytämiäni laattoja – klikkaa tästä, jos haluat nähdä kuvan niistä) ja sitten kesämökille Suomessa.

Punainen lanka kesälle löytyi muutamista kirjoista, jotka löysin barcelonalaisen kadun varrelta kesäkuussa ja joihin keksin myös kokeilla kirjailija ja kriitikko Ford Madox Fordin (1873–1939) vinkkiä saada nopeasti selville, pidämmekö me jostakin kirjasta vai emme: Avaa kirja sivulta 99. Jos kerronta on niin kiehtovaa, että käännät sivulle 100 ja jatkat lukemista, tiedät löytäneesi itsellesi sopivan romaanin. En ole aivan varma, olenko samaa mieltä... sinun täytyy kokeilla itse!

Töölön Poni – Laid-back Haircuts, and Coffee

ENG I got a new haircut and color on Friday! Töölön Poni is a relaxed hairdresser's in the Töölö neighborhood of Helsinki, right next to the tram depot, with good music and vintage pieces, and you can tell somebody's been doing some color coordination...

They've even saved the previous owner's sign on the wall (there's been a hairdressing salon for several decades)! Remember to ask for eg. plant-based hair dyes, and you can also get a makeup! – My nephew Leo had his summer haircut the same day, isn't he cute!

FIN Minä värjäytin ja leikkautin hiukseni perjantaina! Töölön Poni on rento kampaamo Helsingin Töölössä, aivan raitiovaunuhallien vieressä, jossa soi hyvä musiikki, ympärillä on vintage-esineitä, ja jollakulla on ilmiselvästi värisilmää... 

Kampaamon seinällä on jopa säästetty edellisen omistajan kyltti (paikalla on ollut kampaamo useiden vuosikymmenien ajan)! Muista kysyä mm. kasviväreistä, ja tarjolla on meikkaustakin! – Siskonpoikani Leo oli leikkauttamassa kesätukan samana päivänä, eikö hän olekin suloinen?

At Töölön Poni, there are a lot of retro pieces around, and according to art historian Anna Huusko's book Retroaarteet (WSOY, 2011), the above hangers are from the 60s! Designed by Olavi Arjas, the Majuri hangers were produced by Sarvis. ⎮  Töölön Ponissa on paljon retrojuttuja, ja taidehistorioitsija Anna Huuskon Retroaarteet-kirjan (WSOY, 2011) mukaan yläkuvan Majuri-henkarit ovat 60-luvulta! Sarviksen valmistamat henkarit on suunnitellut Olavi Arjas.
