Season's Greetings!

Photos ⎮ kuvat:   Katja K. #kahwacafe #kandju

ENG I'm sending you Season's Greetings from my recent trip to Canada, greetings as yellow as Montreal in the autumn: bicycles, books, and bonbons; signs, shop fronts, and street art; maple leaves; and the cover of Rupi Kaur's "The Sun And Her Flowers". And Poutine, an iconic Quebec dish of french fries topped with cheese curds and smothered in gravy!

Supercharge You(r Style)!

ENG International Pantone color system chose violet (Ultra Violet Pantone 18-3838) as the color of the year. I only found two violet things in my home: Marimekko napkins (thumbnail, retro tray Sarvis) and a woollen hat by Cycle Jeans I got as a gift many years ago in Italy (the brand's slogan is Be Sure, Wear Pure)... but now I know what I'll be hunting for at the flea market this year!

FIN Kansainvälinen Pantone-värijärjestelmä valitsi vuoden väriksi violetin (Ultra Violet Pantone 18-3838). Minä löysin sitä kotoani vain Marimekon lautasliinoista (pikkukuvassa, retrotarjotin Sarvis) ja vuosia sitten Italiassa lahjaksi saamastani merinovillaisesta Cycle Jeans -piposta (brändin slogan on "Be Sure, Wear Pure")... mutta nyt tiedän mitä tänä vuonna metsästää kirpputorilta!

"Change style seasonally. Style is not static. It's always shifting to reflect new experiences and interests – and your home should mimic that. At the beginning of every season, try putting away a few things. Then sprinkle a couple of finds into the mix. They don't even need to be new! 'Shop' from your bedroom for your living room – an vice versa." (8 ways to supercharge your style, in Apartment Therapy. Complete + Happy Home (Potter Style 2015)

Ohoh Blog, among others

PS And judging a book by its cover, there's a also a violet-covered one: I've been reading Sanna Wikström and Jutta Gustafsberg's pep talk book "Tsemppikirja" during my commute to work this Spring, and I love the following types of passages: "Puff up the (smallest) good and then surrender to it (...) You can stir up good in your life by being grateful for the smallest things: blankets, sunshine, woolen socks, friends, colors... just anything. And when you manage to 'switch' your brain to observe the good over and over again, it becomes a way of life, a way to look at life, and once you internalize this, your life is no longer dependent on what is happening around you."

Toujours Provence!

Photo ⎮ kuva:   midnightshivers.tumblr.com

ENG For a while longer, I want to linger in warmer climes and the books that I have been reading to keep myself warm in the winter evenings: Annie Hawes in Liguria, Peter Kerr in Mallorca, and the Provence trilogy by Peter Mayle...

Much to my sorrow, I recently learned that Mayle passed away in January 2018. In the last part of the trilogy, Encore Provence, Mayle, a self-proclaimed optimist, dreamed of planting olive trees, but realized that he would have to add an extra century to his life in order to surely enjoy the results of his work. – I regret not having any original English passages to share with you (if you know Finnish, see below) but I invite you to get a hold of the trilogy and, why not, Bon Appetit! Travels Through France with Knife, Fork and Corkscrew.

Beach & Finds

Photos ⎮ kuvat:   Katja K. #tenerife #puertodesantiago

ENG I'm just back from a soothing holiday in Tenerife, cleansed – less stress, less depression – and, hopefully, with a new perspective on life.

More than beach finds (that I love) my trip was about soul-searching: I was on a mission to design the life I love (I had brought with me a lovely book of the same name by Ayse Birsel, click here). – The fellow in the following Haruki Murakami extract makes beach finds a metaphor of his whole life... and I just can't help comparing the junk, as he calls it, the junk that the author can have imagined washing ashore in 1985 when Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World was published, to today's debris. Let alone 2050, when there is expected to be more plastic in the seas than fish! – Let's love our seas and try to keep them special, in Murakami's words!

"You want to know about me?" she asked. "Where I was born, what I was like as a girl, where I went to school, when I lost my virginity, what's my favorite color––all that?"
"No," I said. "You're fine as you are. I'll learn more as it comes."
"I'd like to get to know more about you though, little by little."
"I was born by the sea," I said. "I'd go to the beach the morning after a typhoon and find all sorts of things that the waves had tossed up. There'd be bottles and wooden geta and hats and cases for glasses, tables and chairs, things from nowhere near the water. I liked combing trough the stuff, so I was always waiting for the next typhoon."
I put out my cigarette.
"The strange thing is, everything washed up from the sea was purified. Useless junk, but absolutely clean. There wasn't a dirty thing. The sea is special in that way. When I look back over my life so far, I see all that junk on the beach. It's how my life has always been. Gathering up the junk, sorting through it, and then casting it off somewhere else. All for no purpose, leaving it to wash away again."
"This was in your home town?"
"This is all my life. I merely go from one beach to another. Sure I remember the things that happen in between, but that's all. I never tie them together. They're so many things, clean but useless."
She touched my shoulder, then went to the kitchen. She returned with wine for her and beer for me.
"I like the moments of darkness before dawn," she said. "Probably because it's a clean state. Clean and unused."
She snuggled up close next to me on the sofa, pulling the blanket up to her breasts, then took a sip of wine. I poured myself some beer... – Haruki Murakami: Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World (Vintage 2003, translated from the Japanese by Alfred Birnbaum)

"Meren tuomat tavarat olivat kaikki merkillisesti puhdistuneet. Meri on aivan erityislaatuinen olio. Aina kun katson taaksepäin omaa tähänastista elämääni, ajattelen niitä romuja meren rannalla. Minun elämäni on aina sellaista.
Kaadoin uutta olutta lasiin... – Haruki Murakami: Maailmanloppu ja ihmemaa (Tammi 2015, suom. Raisa Porrasmaa)

Love Your Home!

The horseshoe and animal figures painted gold were a gift from Tofu & Talli, the text from Rita.

"Introduce it to your friends. Don't keep your wonderful (or on-the-way-to-wonderful) home under wraps. Sharing it with friends, neighbors, and family can inspire you to keep it cleaner, make improvements more often, and simply enjoy it more." – Apartment Therapy. Complete + Happy Home (Potter Style 2015)

See the globe? It used to sit on my mom's desk when she was a teenager. –  My home is a collection of found or received things, and the vintage Ikea sofa is one of the few bought objects!

Expecting holiday guests...

Photos ⎮ kuvat: Katja K. (The entryway chair in the small image is a flea market find, the cushion from Tallinn's Telliskivi.)

ENG I've been so grateful to spend some time at home these holidays, curled up on the sofa, reading books, after having spread my grandparents' old oriental carpet on the floor for warmth. – Which ones of the below "8 ways to love your home so it loves you back", by Apartment Therapy, have you done these holidays? I've done them all, lucky me...

"1 Treat it right. If you see something that needs attention around the house – a leaky dishwasher, a loose piece of trim – take care of it ASAP. Letting things go in the short term almost always exacerbates the original issue, costing you more money and time in the long run.
2 Buy it flowers. Picking up an inexpensive bunch of flowers (or cutting some from the yard) on a regular basis is a staple of Apartment Therapy's January Cure, our annual guide to starting your year off right. It's a small thing that goes a long way. Colorful blooms can serve as a visual reminder throughout the week that your home – and you! – are worth treating well.
3 Eat delicious meals together. Whether solo, with family, or for guests, cooking at home is always worth it. Each time you prepare a meal, the benefits increase: your cooking skills sharpen; your kitchen gets more streamlined, because you refine its organization as you use it; and, of course, you get to eat really good home-cooked food.
4 Serenade it. Turn up music and belt out a few favorites the next time you're in chores mode; it's way more fun. You can even use the music as a motivator; challenge yourself to finish washing the kitchen floor before the next song starts. You'll clean more energetically and end up happier.
5 Appreciate its uniqueness. No home is perfect. It's the quirks that give it character and charm. Taking time to turn a challenging spot (a dark entryway, a supersmall bedroom) into an eye-catching design moment is one of the more satisfying projects you can take on – and doing so will make you love your space even more.
6 Don't crowd it. Be diligent in letting go of the things that you don't need. Your home should be more than a place to store your stuff. Leaving some room to grow is essential to being comfortable in your place, long-term.
7 Don't skimp on the time spent together. It's easy to prioritize the time you spend outside your home: working, socializing, exercising. But carving out time on a regular basis to spend an evening in – cooking a meal, taking a long bath – creates a necessary home-life balance. Plus, you'll hit the ground running the next day.
8 Introduce it to your friends. Don't keep your wonderful (or on-the-way-to-wonderful) home under wraps. Sharing it with friends, neighbors, and family can inspire you to keep it cleaner, make improvements more often, and simply enjoy it more." – Apartment Therapy. 12 X 2017 (What's next?)

ENG Year 2017 took me to Copenhagen and the Mediterranean – Crete and Barcelona, Rome and Tel Aviv, and bicycle riding in both my home Helsinki and the beautiful Finnish towns of Joutsa, Loviisa and Porvoo…

And ups and downs! And I sincerely wish for joy, and love, and light, and peace – and health for each and everyone of us in 2018!

These here were my twelve most liked Instagram pics this year, featuring details at Generator Rome; Holiday – and Natalia, Natura and Signora Delizia in Helsinki; Malmgård mansion; The Postel in Tel Aviv; Villa Linnea in Loviisa… and one of my sister Salla's beautiful cups, full of funnel chanterelles picked in November!

FIN Vuosi 2017 vei minut Kööpenhaminaan ja Välimerelle – Kreetalle ja Barcelonaan, Roomaan ja Tel Aviviin, ja pyöräretkille kotikaupungissani Helsingissä ja kauniissa suomalaisissa pikkukaupungeissa Joutsassa, Loviisassa ja Porvoossa...

Ja ylä- ja alamäkiin! Toivonkin vilpittömästi iloa, valoa, rauhaa, rakkautta – ja terveyttä meistä jokaiselle vuonna 2018!

Nämä tässä olivat kaksitoista suosituinta Instagram-kuvaani tänä vuonna, ja niiden yksityiskohdissa esiintyvät Generator Rome Roomassa, Holiday – ja Natalia, Natura ja Signora Delizia Helsingissä, Malmgårdin kartano, Postel Tel Avivissa, Villa Linnea Loviisassa... ja yksi Salla-siskoni kauniista kupeista, täynnä marraskuussa poimittuja suppilovahveroita!

ENG Thanks for letting me spend Christmas at the Ilola Old School again this year, like last year! It's New Year's Eve, but I'm still listening to the Christmas carols we listened to – and remembering the details I had time to capture (leaving plenty of others for the Christmases to come)! "Everyday is Christmas"?

"Oispa joulu ainainen"?

Natura – Mindful & Miniature Cuisine

Photo ⎮ kuva: Katja K.

ENG What a better place to celebrate Finland's centenary than with dear friends, in the middle of Helsinki, at Natura (Iso Roobertinkatu 11)!

The menu of clear, clean flavors is "built round Finnish small scale producers and local ingredients", say restaurateurs David and Anya. With a preferance on organic and Fairtrade (my kind of place!), the fish is of sustainable species and the meat comes from farms the restaurateurs know personally and where the animals' living conditions and diet are ideal.

"The milk was from a farm in Mikkeli, Finland, home to a cow called Ilusia and her calf Lorelei. How sweet is that?

While we were told that the capers accompanying the pike perch, served with brown butter and jerusalem artichoke, originated from David's mother's garden in Greece, I especially liked the story that came with my white mold cheese served with potato jam and ash rye bread: I learned that the milk was from a farm in Mikkeli, Finland, home to a cow called Ilusia and her calf Lorelei. How sweet is that?

And talking about wine, to go with my meal I enjoyed a delicious glass of Portuguese vinho verde, Aphros Ten (Loureiro, 2015), produced from certified biodynamic grapes.

Thanks for the invitation Rita, Kalle & Nea!

The interiors, mindful of both lighting and acoustics, is by Ateljé Sotamaa. – And what a gorgeous crowd!

Kiitos kutsusta Rita, Kalle & Nea!

It's all in the detail.
