ENG "Boutique", an exhibition fearlessly fusing elements of visual art and fashion design, was one of the Helsinki Festival 2012 initiatives. I managed to pop in at the Amos Anderson Art Museum on the very last exhibition day, November 12th (the exhibition will now go on tour and will be next seen at the Tokyo Spiral Art Center and during the Sydney Design Week).

Apart from visual treats, the exhibition also offered food for thought: "15%", or an installation by installation artist Salla Salin and fashion designer Timo Rissanen, reminds us that the production of cheap clothes has lead to generating on average a 15% surplus of both produced and treated fabric during the cutting phase. According to the exhibition catalog, "on a global scale this means that the garment industry produces an enormous amount of waste that often goes straight to a dump site". – A visitor buying a t-shirt at the museum gift shop is exposed to the harsh reality: he or she is also handed the fabric surplus generated during the production of the garment (part of the installation) and has to take care of its disposal...

FIN Kuvataidetta ja muotisuunnittelua ennakkoluulottomasti yhdistävä kokonaisuus "Boutique" oli osa Helsingin Juhlaviikkojen 2012 ohjelmistoa. Onnistuin piipahtamaan Amos Andersonin taidemuseossa viimeisenä näyttelypäivänä, marraskuun 12. (näyttely lähtee seuraavaksi kiertueelle ja on ensi keväänä nähtävillä sekä Tokion Spiral Art Centerissä että Sydneyssä Design Weekin aikana).

Silmänilojen lisäksi näyttely tarjosi myös ajattelemisen aihetta: "15%", eli installaatiotaiteilija Salla Salinin ja muotisuunnittelija Timo Rissasen installaatio muistuttaa meitä siitä, että halpojen vaatteiden tuotanto on johtanut keskimäärin 15%:n ylijäämään niin tuotetun kuin käsitellyn kankaan määrässä vaatteiden leikkausvaiheessa. Näyttelykatalogin mukaan se "tarkoittaa globaalin vaateteollisuuden mittakaavassa valtavaa määrää materiaalia – jätettä, joka päätyy yleensä suoraan kaatopaikalle." – Museokaupasta t-paidan itselleen ostava vierailija joutuu kohtamaan julmat tosiasiat: hän saa käteensä myös installaation aikana valmistetun t-paidan tuotannossa syntyneen ylijäämäkankaan, jonka hävittämisestä hän joutuu kantamaan vastuun...

ITA Quest'anno una delle iniziative del Festival di Helsinki è stata "Boutique", ovvero una mostra in cui si fondono arte visiva e design senza timore. Ho fatto giusto in tempo a vederla presso il Museo d'Arte Amos Anderson di Helsinki. (Ora la mostra, smontata il 12 novembre, andrà in tour e sarà prossimamente aperta al pubblico, prima al Centro Arte Spirale Tokyo e successivamente durante la Design Week di Sydney.)

A parte coccolare il visitatore visivamente, la mostra offre anche spunti di riflessione: "15%", l'installazione dell'artista Salla Salin e del fashion designer Timo Rissanen, ci ricorda che la produzione di vestiti a buon mercato ha portato a generare in media un surplus del 15% di tessuto prodotto e trattato durante la fase di taglio. Secondo il catalogo della mostra, "su scala globale, questo significa che l'industria dell'abbigliamento produce una quantità enorme di rifiuti che va spesso direttamente in una discarica". – Il visitatore che acquista una maglietta al negozietto del museo è esposto alla dura realtà: gli viene consegnato anche il surplus di tessuto generato durante la produzione del capo (parte dell'installazione) e deve quindi provvedere al suo smaltimento.
