ENG Today's the first day of autumn break in Finnish schools and I spent some time with my nephews Nooa (9) and Leo (6).

Handicrafts nicely counterbalanced gamboling outside in the beautiful fall colors (even though I felt that I had been surreptitiously captured by the sewing machine after showing the contents of my scrap box to the boys, and found myself sewing yarn-headed "voodoo dolls'" side seams... )

After the boys had left, I remembered Satu Laatikainen and Riitta Malinen-Tyynelä's book Papiljottilehmä ja haalarihai. Helppoja leluja kotitarpeista (Karisto, 2009), which is obviously the winner for the best crafted title – I could attempt translating it as "Curler Cow and Jumpsuit Shark. Easy Toys from Home Supplies". This book and its toys and entertainment mainly targeted for babies and toddlers encourages you to look at the daily life with an open mind: everyday life produces treasures that annoyingly often end up in a landfill. "Examine your environment, peek into the trash, make an excursion into the interesting contents of cabinets and stashed mounds of things."

The authors say that working on the book was like a journey back in time and "the 1970s childhood coming to life in orange-brown hues, terrycloth, and large blooms." I know exactly what they're talking about...

FIN Minä vietin tänään, syyslomaviikon ekana päivänä aikaa siskonpoikieni Nooan (9) ja Leon (6) kanssa. Askartelu oli mukavaa vastapainoa kauniissa ruskassa kirmaamiselle (vaikka tädistä tuntuikin, että jouduin tilkkulaatikkoa esiteltyäni vaivihkaa kaapatuksi ompelukoneen ääreen, ja huomasin ompelevani villalankapäisten "voodoonukkien" sivusaumoja... )

Poikien lähdettyä muistin Satu Laatikaisen ja Riitta Malinen-Tyynelän Papiljottilehmä ja haalarihai. Helppoja leluja kotitarpeista -kirjan (Karisto, 2009), joka voittaa ilman muuta palkinnon parhaiten askarrellusta nimestä... Tämä kirja ja sen lähinnä vauvoille ja taaperoikäisille suunnatut lelut ja viihdykkeet kannustavat "katsomaan arkea avarasti: jokapäiväinen elämä tuottaa aarteita, jotka harmittavan usein päätyvät kaatopaikalle. Tutkikaa ympäristöä, kurkatkaa roskakoriin, tehkää mielenkiintoinen retki kaappien ja tavararöykkiöiden kätköihin." Kirjan tekijät kertovat, että työstövaihe oli kuin aikamatka omaan lapsuuteen, jolloin "1970-luvulla eletty lapsuus heräsi henkiin oranssinruskeana, froteisena ja suurikukkaisena". Tiedän tarkalleen, mistä he puhuvat...

"Hanging out mobile", on page 13 of the book. You need: a hanger, baby food jar lids, yarn, colors, and a drill – remember the baby's safety, and secure the mobile carefully!  ⎮ Hengaava mobile, kirjan sivulta 13. Tarvikkeet: henkari, lastenruokapurkin kansia, narua, värejä ja pora – muista vauvan turvallisuus, ja kiinnitä mobile huolellisesti! 

ITA Oggi è il primo giorno di pausa autunnale nelle scuole finlandesi e ho trascorso un po' di tempo con i miei nipoti Nooa (9) e Leo (6). Abbiamo saltellato fuori nei bellissimi colori autunnali e ci siamo dilettati in lavori di artigianato che hanno ben controbilanciato la nostra giornata (anche se a tratti mi sembrava di essere stata catturata dalla macchina da cucire dopo aver mostrato il contenuto della mia casella di scarto ai ragazzi, e mi sono trovata a cucire delle "bambole voodoo" dai capelli di filo di lana...)

Dopo che i ragazzi se ne sono andati, mi sono ricordata il libro di Satu Laatikainen e Riitta Malinen-Tyynelä intitolato Papiljottilehmä ja haalarihai. Helppoja leluja kotitarpeista (Karisto, 2009), che è senz'altro il vincitore per il miglior titolo artigianale ("Bigodino mucca e tuta squalo. Facili giocattoli da articoli per la casa"). Questo libro con i suoi giocattoli e intrattenimenti mirati principalmente per neonati e bambini incoraggia ad affrontare la vita quotidiana a mente aperta: la vita produce "tesori" che spesso finiscono in una discarica, ed è un vero peccato. "Esaminate il vostro ambiente, sbirciate nel cestino, fate un'escursione nei contenuti interessanti di armadi e cumuli di cose nascosti."

Gli autori dicono che lavorare sul libro è stato come un viaggio nel tempo e "l'infanzia negli anni '70 ha preso vita in tonalità arancio-marrone, spugna, e grandi fioriture". So esattamente di cosa parlano...
